Athens Institution Identifier

Institution identification systems used by the Athens Access Management System.

Academic and Research Institutions in the World. Data are freely available and re-usable, and are partly sourced from CSIC's webometrics.info data.  Data used by the AuthorClaim service. A simple web user interface makes sure that the service can be reproduced on other sites.

Projects and ongoing developments

CEIHE (Classifying European Institutes for Higher Education)

Project extended to a second phase. Final report 'Mapping Diversity' is available.

JSCIEP (Journal Supply Chain Efficiency Improvement Pilot)

Collaborative project that began in 2006: partners British Library, SWETS, Ringgold, Highwire Press. The proejct aimed to discover whether the creation of a standard, commonly used identifier for institutions would be beneficial to all parties involved in the journal supply chain. Intention was to integrate inter-operability around a standard identifier codified with standard descriptive metadata.

NISO has set up a working group to explore issues around institution identification. Charged with proposing and identifier that will identify institutions and describe relationships between entities within institutions. Builds on the work of the JSCIEP.

Added 15 September 2009: NISO has published the results of a survey on institutional identifiers. The NISO I2 Working Group surveyed repository managers and developers to determine the current practices and needs of the repository community regarding institutional identifiers. Results from the survey will inform a set of use cases that will be shared with the community, and that are expected to drive the development of a new standard for institutional identifiers. The report can be found here.

Added 14 July 2010: The NISO Institutional Identifier (I2) Working Group (WG) has released a
midterm report:  http://www.niso.org/workrooms/i2/midtermreport/

OCLC/Sage/Ringgold work

Study underway to investigate whether OCLC's Worldcat library identifiers can be mapped to Ringgold's OpenIdentify identifiers.

Networking Names

New report on identifiers from the RLG/OCLC. This report identifies the necessary components of a "Cooperative Identities Hub" that would address the problem space in the research community and have the most impact across different target audiences.

Vocabulary Mapping Framework

JISC-funded project to create an extensive and authoritative mapping of vocabularies from major content metadata standards, creating a downloadable tool to support interoperability across communities. The work is an expansion of the existing RDA/ONIX Framework into a comprehensive vocabulary of resource relators and categories, which will be a superset of those used in major standards from the publisher/producer, education and bibliographic/heritage communities (CIDOC CRM; DCMI; DDEX; DOI; FRBR; MARC21; LOM; ONIX; RDA).
