JSCIEP (Journal Supply Chain Efficiency Improvement Pilot)

http://www.journalsupplychain.org/

Collaborative project that began in 2006: partners British Library, SWETS, Ringgold, Highwire Press. The proejct aimed to discover whether the creation of a standard, commonly used identifier for institutions would be beneficial to all parties involved in the journal supply chain. Intention was to integrate inter-operability around a standard identifier codified with standard descriptive metadata.

NISO

http://www.niso.org/news/pr/view?item_key=051cf455978ba32beeeaf14fe819df48c56964ba

NISO has set up a working group to explore issues around institution identification. Charged with proposing and identifier that will identify institutions and describe relationships between entities within institutions. Builds on the work of the JSCIEP.

Added 15 September 2009: NISO has published the results of a survey on institutional identifiers. The NISO I2 Working Group surveyed repository managers and developers to determine the current practices and needs of the repository community regarding institutional identifiers. Results from the survey will inform a set of use cases that will be shared with the community, and that are expected to drive the development of a new standard for institutional identifiers. The report can be found here.

Vocabulary Mapping Framework

http://www.jisc.ac.uk/whatwedo/projects/vocab-framework.aspx

The work is an expansion of the existing RDA/ONIX Framework into a comprehensive vocabulary of resource relators and categories, which will be a superset of those used in major standards from the publisher/producer, education and bibliographic/heritage communities (CIDOC CRM; DCMI; DDEX; DOI; FRBR; MARC21; LOM; ONIX; RDA).
